Hemisfair is pleased to announce ¡Viva Hemisfair!, a 50th Anniversary celebration full of music, food, history and throwbacks to the 1968 World’s Fair.
The event, which will take place April 6-8, 2018, marks fifty years since the 1968 World’s Fair came to San Antonio. Cultural zones, musical performances and public art will fill the Hemisfair district with colorful experiences, while historical exhibits will teach guests about the neighborhood that stood before the Fair, events during the 1968 World’s Fair, and future plans for redevelopment. Other participating venues in the district include the Institute of Texan Cultures, the Tower of the Americas, Hilton Palacio Del Rio, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Magik Children’s Theatre and the Mexican Cultural Institute.
The festival will have cultural activation zones for Americana, Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Unlike the 1968 World’s Fair, the cultural zones won’t be made up of formal delegations from these regions, but rather San Antonians with a connection to heritage traditions.
Each zone will have different activities for festival guests including food, musical performances and interactive demonstrations. There will also be a children’s garden with “larger-than-life” art installations, a 60s retrospective fashion show and special events to honor 1968 World’s Fair attendees. “While we are planning a few ticketed events, 95% of the festival will be free for guests,” says Traci Lewand, Event Manager for Hemisfair.
¡Viva Hemisfair! runs April 6-8, 2018 and is an official Tricentennial event. Hemisfair will release further details as the event approaches, but is currently seeking vendors for the different activations zones.
