At White Rock Apartments in San Antonio, Texas, it is clear that we have it all, but we still feel obliged to inform you of essential information. We encourage you to stay up to date with our blogs so that you don’t miss out on local recommendations, new recipes, or day-to-day tips.
Speaking of recommendations, despite the coronavirus pandemic, new, bold restaurants have been braving shutdowns, mandates, and restrictions to open their doors for the first time, with the stakes even higher than they normally are for blossoming businesses. Within the last twelve months, however, this hasn’t stopped some of the buzziest restaurant openings from happening across San Antonio. From Caribbean fare and BBQ joints to brunch spots, The Alamo City continues to expand upon the rich culinary institutions that make it comparable to the best national dining scenes. Not sure where to start? Here are three of our favorites thus far!
Maverick Texas Brasserie – 710 S St. Mary’s Street, San Antonio, Texas 78205
Chef Chris Carlson, formerly with Sandbar and Francis Bogside, holds the reigns at Maverick Texas Brasserie, one of Southtown’s latest restaurants, and we think there is no one better for the job. His menus evoke the true spirit of a maverick, with its out-of-the-box thinking, and by promoting an “a la carte” selection, he encourages diners to be independent to a degree and create their very own experience. While there are plenty of entrees to choose from for those who prefer to follow the grain, like Steak Frite and Rotisserie Half Duck, there are just as many a la carte selections to share. Take your pick from Green Chili Mac & Pork Cracklings or Crispy Potato Salad with Dijon, capers, and scallions.
Pinch Boil House – 124 N Main Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78205
Best friends and Houston transplants, Andrew Ho and Sean Wen are hopping on the Southeast Asian-inspired seafood and snack train with their new Downtown Houston restaurant, Pinch Boil House. Here, you’ll find snacks to share, rice bowls, and of course, fresh seafood boils with your choice of sides, sauces, and spices. Keep it simple with just shrimp, mussels, or snow crab legs. There’s even crawfish when it’s in season! Or, you can step it up a notch with the Seafood Feast, which serves up two to three pounds of the freshest seafood medley, tossed in a sauce of your choice. Pair it with corn, potatoes, or smoked sausage, and you will be full for the rest of the evening – at least!
The Jerk Shack – 117 Matyear Street, San Antonio, Texas 78237
Retired Army veterans, Lattoia and Cornelius Massey, are bringing artisan Caribbean cuisine to the Westside with their patio-seating-only restaurant, The Jerk Shack. It has already been drawing lines with its jerk chicken and pork by the pound, ribs by the rack, braised oxtails, and jerk wings with mac and cheese. You can even opt for Family Packs that feed between two and six people and include delicious signature sides, like Rice N Peas, Pineapple Habanero Slaw, Sauteed Cabbage N Carrots, Potato Salad, and more. The Jerk Shack even boasts daily specials – just check their Facebook page for more information.
